Volkswagen Keyless Entry and Push-Button Start
Volkswagen has been around for years and is well-known for their classic automobiles. They also have a variety of popular newer models with features like keyless entry and push-button start.
From the 1930s to the 2000's, Volkswagen used a simple metal key with an ability to flip. They eventually changed to keys with chips, and later to smart keys.
Keyless Entry System
Modern automobiles have key fob systems that let you to start the car and open the doors without touching the vehicle. These systems use radio frequency signals to transmit and receive data between the key fob and the car. Special circuitry is used to ensure security. Some models are more sophisticated than others, with added features like a remote start that only allows the car to start when the key fob is within a particular distance.
There are volkswagon keys for adding these systems to your vehicle no matter if you purchase it or add them later. Certain systems only unlock the door on the driver's side, while others include additional convenience features like the smartphone app that lets you lock or unlock your vehicle from anywhere. Some systems even include an alarm.

Keyless Start System
By pressing a button keyless start allows you to start and enter your vehicle without having to unlock the door with keys or reach into your pockets. When you press the button, a unique signal from the key fob triggers the ignition to begin your car.
The system works much like the smart key, and has one or more antennas placed around the vehicle that are able to detect the electronic ID of the fob whenever you come closer to it. The car's transmitter is notified to disable the immobilizer and transmit energy to the starter circuit which then starts your engine.
Once the engine is running it can be shut down by pressing and holding the button. The same signal is used to lock the doors to allow you to exit your car without having to be concerned about someone stealing your keys or being locked out.

Older VW models have the option of keyless entry but many newer VWs come with it as standard. If you own an older VW that has this feature your key fob has what's known as a "backup mechanical key" that can be inserted into an emergency port in the dash or steering column to begin your vehicle. Consult the owner's manual or service instructions for more details about this procedure.
Keys with Transponder Chips
The microchips' electronic circuitry is built into the head portion of your Volkswagen key. The chip sends a signal to your car when the key is turned on and is inserted into the ignition lock. This signal tells the car you have the correct key and allows it to open the door and start the motor. The chip does not require any battery power to operate - it receives an audio signal transmitted by the antenna ring of your car.
Prior to the year 2000, most automobiles had simple metal keys. However, in the early 2000s, most automakers started to make use of a key-fob that had a switchblade function - by pressing a button the metal key would be released from the remote-locking fob, ready to be put into the vehicle's ignition. This was a popular feature and is still in use today.
When you get your Volkswagen replacement keys, they'll contain an transponder chip that will need to be cloned to match the car's systems. This is a simple process which can be carried out at home using a key cloning software such as the KEYDIY X2 Remote Cloner or another similar device. If you are replacing a key or having a new one made, make sure to bring verification of ownership such as your driver's license or your vehicle registration.
Lost Keys
If you are concerned about losing your Volkswagen keys you can buy keys finders for around $20. These tiny devices function by sending an electronic signal to your smartphone when your keys are near. They are ideal for low-light areas as well as for keeping your keys organized in busy parking areas. Some are water-resistant and can be used to track your car in the event it is stolen.
The best way to avoid losing your VW keys is to ensure they are always kept in a single location, like hanging them near the front door or in your pocket. You can also get the new key cut at a locksmith. In the majority of cases, this is much less expensive than obtaining an alternative key from a dealer.
If your Volkswagen is equipped with chip keys it is possible to order a replacement from the dealer if it's damaged or lost. You will need to bring your registration or title and proof of ownership with you when you visit the dealership. The dealer will request a new Volkswagen key. The customer must return the vehicle to the dealer to have the key programmed. You can also contact a locksmith who will be able to create a key using the VIN.
